April 2021 Poem-A-Day Challenge, Day 12
These poetry challenges are getting … well, challenging! Today we’re writing a poem using at least three of the following six words: convict, great, play, race, season, and voice. We get extra credit for using all six, so of course I had to try!
Wind Song
There’s nothing like the wind
When it races out to play
Without worry for the season
Fall or winter, summer, spring
There’s nothing like the wind
When it floats sweet apple pie
Or wafts around the fresh-cut grass
Or a deep, dark earthy brew
There’s nothing like the wind
When it ripples through the leaves
Or batters at the ocean waves
Or a magic jumping fountain
There’s nothing like the wind
When it coaxes up a kite
Or billows clouds across the sky
Or laundered linens on the line
There’s nothing like the wind
When it cools a sweat-soaked back
Or bears the voice of distant laughter
Or a haunting tune upon the air
But what about the wind
That uproots your favorite tree
Or ignites a blazing forest fire
Or a great storm upon the sea
Or what about the wind
When it wipes out farmers’ crops
Or rips the shingles off of rooftops
Or the rooftop off a house
Yes, what about the wind
When it wraps your world in color
Soothes your aching soul
But then swipes it all away
I suppose it’s just like everything
Some are good, and some are bad
Much like our humanity
To each, their own conviction
Yet when hopes are dashed
When wishes craved
We step outside, we close our eyes
And, oh, there’s nothing like the wind
