I generally don’t post multiple times in one day, but recent events warrant comment. I’m finally catching up on everything that happened in our nation’s capital yesterday and … what in the world is happening to this country?!
Anyone who knows me knows I don’t do politics. Let me rephrase that: I vote, I pay attention, I listen, and I quietly do my part. I do not get caught up in bipartisanship, I don’t vote strictly by party, and I rarely share my opinions and views. But the blatant outright attack on democracy we all witnessed this week (and the last few months, honestly) goes far, far beyond partisanship. It’s not even in the same universe, the same galaxy. I don’t care who you voted for or which party you belong to—this country has become an absolute disgrace. I will never understand such intense loyalty to a person who so clearly couldn’t care less about this country and her people. We have lost all sense of humanity, honor, civility, clarity, morality. I am angry. I am sad. I am ashamed.
But I also refuse to believe all hope is lost.
Yes, we have reached the absolute lowest of the lowest point in modern history. Yes, this country is in a terrifying state of disarray. Yes, the disunity, injustice, racism, hate, resentment, fear that have permeated our nation over the past four years still run rampant. Yes, there will always be those individuals who fight against unity, diversity, and democracy. Yes, it will likely take years to heal this country and return her to her enviable position in the world. But we are the United States of America and I believe her citizens have the courage, the strength, the tenacity, the allegiance to stand up, to stand together and be the difference. We all must believe this and act in accordance because to think otherwise, to act otherwise is … unconscionable.
It feels like an insurmountable task, and maybe it is. Maybe I’m delusional but hope is all we have right now and I, for one, will hang onto that feeling with everything I have. Ultimately, all it takes is one teeny, tiny, baby step in the right direction and that first step is something we can all do today–right here, right now.
Pray.
