The Promised World

April 2021 Poem-A-Day Challenge, Day 26

Happy Monday! We’re down to the final few days of my poetry challenge and we begin our week with the phrase “(blank) World.” I had originally titled this “Fantasy World” because what I envision feels so far removed from reality these days and it’s very disheartening. I refuse to give up hope, though, so I’m choosing to believe we will eventually find our way. Perhaps that’s naïve of me but I’ve been accused of far worse.

The Promised World

The world of my dreams
Is free from the shackles
Of judgment, intolerance
And hate
Of fear, insecurity
And greed
It bestows compassion
Embraces empathy
Seeks truth
And trusts in faith
It boasts of love
Friendship and community
Of equality, justice
And humanity
It is our beautiful gift
A legacy of honor
Of hope and joy
Bequeathed to our children
The promise of a new day
Built upon the compromise
And the sacrifice
Of we who came before
