The Gentle Little Lamb

April 2021 Poem-A-Day Challenge, Day 19

We’re starting this week by writing a poem with an animal in the title. This one is for my daughter, who wants to take care of animals and have lots of pets when she grows up. 🥰🐑

The Gentle Little Lamb

Animals are my thing, mom
My daughter often claims
She clearly wants to tend to them
Whether wild or quite tame

She makes houses for the ladybugs
Brings them bugs and leaves to eat
Sprinkles crumbs outside for all the ants
Who never want for treats

She paints homes for local birds
In pretty pink and purple hues
Hangs them oh so high up in our tree
How lucky is their view!

She guards and feeds her tiny fish
All her own up in her room
Orange Sunshine and blue Sea
Her bright beacons in this gloom

Dogs and cats, horses, squirrels
Bees and flies, foxes, pigs
She loves them all up to the moon
God’s great creatures, small and big

My girl she is a gentle soul
Her empathy knows no bounds
She has a heart of purest gold
And as her momma I’m damn proud
