I love sunflowers.
Their sunny, smiling faces speak to me of happier times, commemorating the most significant, most precious milestones of my life:
Dating: My second date with my husband, when he stopped suddenly at a NYC street vendor on our leisurely walk back to the subway just to buy me a solitary stem, right before he—quite surprisingly since we’d only met up twice!—inquired whether we had a future together. We still joke and laugh about that ballsy moment of his, LOL!
Marriage: Our wedding day, when my closest family and friends strolled down the aisle holding a quartet of these golden beauties.
Children: Mornings spent skipping through a field of these slim, towering stalks with our children before heading over to play at Happy Day Farm.
Yeah, I just love sunflowers and everything they represent to my big beautiful life. I wonder where they’ll find me on the next leg of my journey. For now, they’re like poetry in their inspiration: simple, poignant, melodious, romantic. And so, I wrote a poem about them …
Sunflower
Still
Silent
Serene
Through the black, a vast and cloudless sky
Dawn saunters in, stretching slowly, slowly
A kaleidoscope of streaking colors
Blues
Oranges
Violets
Breathtaking in its tranquil gentility
An illustrious star rises, gazing down, down
Its sultry stare so valiant, so bold
Bright
Brazen
Blithe
Far below, a sea of bulging bodies
Begin to rouse, unfurling lazily, lazily
To start anew, a fresh and clean-slate day
Unbowed
Unbent
Unbroken
Spindly necks arch to the sky
Polished petals unravel, glistening grandly, grandly
Behold, a grand and glorious garden
Reds
Yellows
Golds
Sway daintily upon the breeze
Flawless faces content, always smiling, smiling
Frolic and play, giggle and sashay
Pretty
Perennial
Primeval
Day strolls by and clouds barrel in
Charge into formation, swiftly filing, filing
Winds kick up, rains storm down
Dank
Dark
Dense
Stand to attention, take no knee
Surround your closest brethren, gently shielding, shielding
Bestow your energies, soothe their fears
Shivering
Shimmering
Subtending
Engulfed by darkness, sheltered as one
Silence, descend to peace, quietly slumbering, slumbering
Good night, sweet beauties, rest now, rest
Still
Silent
Serene
