Nightflowers

Poetry challenge day 9: No prompt today. I came across this word in the fantasy series I’m reading (thank you, Robert Jordan!) and knew immediately it would be the title of my next poem because it carried me to my Happy Place. I also wanted to include the perfect picture, but I couldn’t find one I deemed good enough, so I chose to leave it up to the imagination. I think Walt would have approved.

Nightflowers

Dusk has settled on all the lands
Blankets litter Main Street
Magical whimsy is in the air
A pixie’s dusting coats our feet

Ice cream ears are in our hands
Our dizzying joy just can’t be beat
The lights wink out, it’s almost time
We dash to take our seats

At an upstairs window we all stare
Atop the grandest spire
There appears a brightly shining star
To set the night afire

Click, flash, boom!

Nightflowers bloom above the castle
Red, yellow, blue, and white
A sparkling garden high up in the sky
Much to the revelers’ delight

A melody waltzes round the square
Seizing tight our hearts
Murmured oohs and aahs rise up
And then the singing starts

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you*

Words of beauty, words of might
Never fail to make me cry
A perfect night that’s made for wishes
My wish would be to fly

I’d fly so high, high in the sky
Due North to Never Never Land
For what’s a wish without a dream
And a dream no less than grand

The nightflowers slowly fizzle out
With one last booming crack
And I wonder for the hundredth time
Oh, when will I be back?

I know one day I’ll see again
This light garden in the night
But for now I’ll hold its memory dear
In my soul so warm and bright
