Heartwood

April 2021 Poem-A-Day Challenge, Day 8

Today’s challenge is to write a metaphor poem so, of course, my mind immediately went to my beloved solitary trees. I’m not alone anymore but that girl–that strong, sensitive, independent girl–will always hold a special place in my heart.

Heartwood

I stand before you graceful and tall
Hardened and sturdy on the surface
Soft and supple at my core
I wear my heart upon my branches
My soul I keep rooted and safe
See my many rings, they tell the story
Of a quiet and solitary existence
Until the seeds of your love
Breathed me back to life
