Get Back In That Bed

April 2021 Poem-A-Day Challenge, Day 10

The prompt for today: Take the phrase “Get (blank),” replace the blank with a word or phrase, and make the new phrase the title of your poem. My piece pretty much sums up how I feel every morning, ha ha. I crave my quiet reading time and find it quite challenging to give it up! Why must duty call, anyways? There’s always tomorrow …

Get Back In That Bed

Saturday dawns
Crisp and overcast
Perfect day to laze in bed
Relishing a second cup

Fantasy book in hand
Split open that spine
Breathe deep, release
Inhale that musty bouquet

Ten pages in
A sharp click, clack
Bolted from bliss
Kids awake at the crack

Pitter, patter, pitter, patter
Tiny feet, and then a head
Ugh, too early to be up, kid
Get back in that bed

I’ll call you when ready
But probably never
Momma needs down time
Hope to stay here forever
