I took my kids on a picnic in the backyard today.
(Before you give me the credit I don’t deserve, I got the idea from a close friend, who did the same with her young daughter earlier this week. Thank you, T.B.!).
Ashamedly, I haven’t been the most present of parents these days (I don’t think I need to explain why), so I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to connect with them and spend some quality time. Along with our lunch of mini grilled cheese sandwiches, sour cream and onion Pringles, and baby oranges, I brought along three notepads and three pencils.
As we ate, we talked about our five senses, and I tasked my kids with being observers of nature while we sat on the grass under the old tree at the back of our property. Then, I asked them to write about their observations. My son, who’s 5, had no interest in writing. He spent the whole time talking about insects and the eating habits of eagles (LOL) … my little scientist. 😊
My daughter (she’s 7), on the other hand, wrote the most amazing poem—yes, all on her own—so, of course, I had to share it here (with her full permission and in her exact words). This momma’s heart aches with love and pride. Can you guess which line is my absolute favorite?!
Danceing Grass
The wind blows softly
As the grass moves
It looks like they are danceing
It seemes soft and gentle
The brees feels good
It starts out slow
And then the wind starts to blow
The branches start to sway
The leaves are blowing everywhere
I feel the brees
I taste fall
Danceing grass in the wind

Be still my heart Isabella! What a beautiful little soul you have. And what a wonderful mother you have to bring it out in you, so special!
Thank you, my friend. Your comment truly warmed my heart. 🙂
Like daughter, like mother. Simple, yet wholesome and sweet. 🥰
