After about 13 years of working as an editor for various publications in New York City, I gave up my professional career to stay home with my two beautiful children. While I enjoy being a mom (mostly), the trials and tribulations that these two human beings put me through daily are enough to test the patience of a saint! And I am no saint. I’ve spent the past four-and-a-half years struggling to find my way back to the autonomous, carefree woman I once was. My first step toward that goal came in June, when I took over as president of a local chapter of the International Moms Club. This role has introduced me to many wonderful moms, allowed me to flex my professional and creative muscles, and given me a whole new purpose! Most importantly, though, it’s motivated me to pursue my true dream: starting this blog. I love to write, and I love to make people laugh, so that’s why I’m here. Full disclosure: I tend to be too open, a little (OK, a lot) sarcastic, and honest to a fault. I love my kids to the moon and back, but they drive me crazy and I’m not afraid to admit it or write about it.

The Irony Of Time

August 20, 2020 Sabrina MannoWhims & Words1 Comment on The Irony Of Time

I’ve often wondered what a midlife crisis would look like—and when it would happen. As a young adult, I pictured an abrupt, bold, seemingly catastrophic event during a specific time in one’s life—somewhere around the 50-year mark—that comes roaring in…

We are now exactly two weeks into my mental synchronization “experiment.” Here are my key takeaways so far: 1) First of all, I do not have the fortitude, aptitude, or patience to be a teacher of young children and I’m…

Narrative Subjectivity

August 16, 2020 Sabrina MannoWhims & Words1 Comment on Narrative Subjectivity

I took an online writing class about two weeks ago and during this time I learned about something called “freewriting,” which essentially means sitting down with a pen and paper and writing—off the top of your head—from a story prompt…

The River That Swallowed My Loneliness

I originally intended this to be a personal essay, but it just wasn’t … flowing. So, I rewrote it into a poem: I hear you racing to my left, swift and strong My quiet, charitable companion Blue-gray waves lapping the…

The Recipe Box

A childhood memory took me on a surprising journey this morning … It sits in the center of the table, surrounded by sprinklings of flour, sugar, nuts, and cocoa. A thin coating of flour dusts its top. The mustard-yellow lid…

Where Are You, Bedtime?

August 4, 2020 Sabrina MannoWhims & Words1 Comment on Where Are You, Bedtime?

You know what’s the best thing ever? Bedtime. When the crazies who have torn through every room in your house like a hurtling, out-of-control tornado slumber into dream land and the house falls silent and still. Oh yeah, I start…

Mental Synchronization (Part 1)

I’m borrowing this phrase from Frozen because it’s perfect for the plan I’m putting into place this week. Plus, it’s so fun singing that part of the song: “men-tal syn-chro-ni-za-tion.” Admit it, you sang that line in your head, too,…

He Who Planted The Seed

As a writer, sometimes, out of nowhere, inspiration hits and all you can do is ride the wave. This is one of those times … For as long as I can remember I’ve had a thing for “solitary trees,” standing…

Bean Burgers: A “Nontraditional” Take On Dinner

I’m a meat and carb lover, hands down. I grew up believing dinner consisted of a meat, a starch, and a vegetable—and I still do. It’s silly but I find it immensely difficult to break with “tradition.” That’s what my…

Suffocation, No Breathing

July 28, 2020 Sabrina MannoWhims & Words4 Comments on Suffocation, No Breathing

I’m tired, so tired. I’m tired of worrying. I’m tired of being scared. I’m tired of overthinking and making decisions. I’m tired of parenting. I’m tired of feeling suffocated, being pawed at, hung all over, clutched and clung to. I’m…

About This Site

This blog isn’t solely about parenting. Yes, I’m a stay-at-home mom but I wear many other hats: wife, sister, daughter, chef, baker, chauffer, personal shopper, party planner, cleaning lady, customer service and marketing manager for a local insurance agency, the list is endless. I live so much in my own head and writing is my therapy. I’ve been craving an open, honest, and nonjudgmental outlet for those thoughts, and this blog is it. Why not just keep a journal? Because knowing there are other moms out there going through my same experiences lifts my spirits and motivates me to stay strong. And if I can help and maybe even inspire these women or make them laugh while fulfilling my dream, well, then, that’s a wonderful thing!
